Paris, 04/25/2007 - 08/15/2007
Thirty years ago, Paris's Centre Pompidou opened
to the public with one of the most exciting
inaugural shows in modern history — a retrospective
of French artist Marcel Duchamp's extraordinary
work. In celebration of that landmark event, three
decades later, the formidable modern and
contemporary art institution pays homage to
Duchamp by naming its thirty-year anniversary
exhibition after one of his works of art.
Airs de Paris combines the work of seventy-three
contemporary and modern artists under the theme
of city life. In this extraordinarily diverse gathering,
works by Marcel Duchamp blend with pieces by
Italian artist Tatiana Trouvé, American Nan Goldin,
and Anglo-Iraqi Zaha Hadid, among others.
Whether painters, architects or designers, each
artist shares a special relationship with the City of
Light, having worked or lived there at a particular
time. Organized around two areas, the exhibition
explores the evolution of the city and its
inhabitants through the artist's eyes and suggests
different visions of tomorrow's urban environment.
