The Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasties, spanning nearly
two millennia of China's ancient history—from
around 2070 B.C. to 256 B.C.—
are considered the cradle of this prodigious Eastern
culture. Many aspects of current Chinese civilization
derive from this fertile rootstock, from daily habits to
overarching social mores. Delving into such a rich
past, the Hong Kong Museum of History has set up
an exhibition of over 100 cultural relics from the three
dynasties, excavated from the Henan Province in the
Central Plains. With pieces ranging from the kitchen
to the battlefield, the exhibition brings to light the
culture of the eras, pointing to the many rites and
practices of daily life, as well as more exceptional
events. With beautiful decorative patterns and elaborate
workmanship, the bronze wares are both a visually
imposing record of a bygone time and a reminder
that these dynasties are a part of our global cultural
heritage.
