Questioning the world and our place in it through
monumental pieces in plaster, metal, painting and
collage, Anselm Kiefer, born precisely in 1945, is
one of the most brightly challenging artists to
come out of post-World War II Germany. Along
with traditional materials and approaches, Kiefer's
works come to life through unusual materials such
as lead, wire, straw, plaster, clay, sunflower seeds,
ashes and dust: not one's ordinary paintbox. To
celebrate its tenth anniversary, the Guggenheim
Bilbao is devoting an exhibition to the artist, aiming
to present an "anthology" of Kiefer's productions,
including major works produced in the past ten
years on loan from private and public collections,
as well as works from earlier stages of Kiefer's
career. The show offers a delving view into the
striking vision of this artist, who evokes war, strife,
religion, rebirth and other major pillars of our
collective experience in the modern world.
