A pioneer ink painter, calligrapher, educator and
administrator, for more than 50 years Chinese artist
Wucius Wong has led a movement to blend modern
Western theories and concepts within the framework
of traditional Asian art. Design geometry and
advanced graphic elements lay the groundwork for
his breathtaking landscapes, cityscapes and bird's
eye vistas, resulting in a complex, at times abstract,
multi-layering of form, color, texture and rhythm.
Starting with the existentialist compositions and
atmospheric abstractions of his youth through to
sparse textural studies and awesome fragmented
cityscapes, the show was designed as a large-scale
celebration of his success in heralding a new horizon
in ink painting. Featuring 77 works arranged in five
decade-long chronological sections, the retrospective
showcases his incredible stylistic evolutions and
innovations from the 1950s until today.
