Basel, Fondation Beyeler

This is the first comprehensive retrospective exhibition of American painter and draftsman Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) ever held in Europe, marking the occasion of the fiftieth birthday of the artist, who died of a drug overdose at the age of only twenty-seven. It unites over one hundred paintings, works on paper and objects from renowned museums and private collections around the world.

The artist began in the New York underground, as a graffiti artist, musician and actor, before turning to painting at age nineteen. He produced an oeuvre of approximately 1000 paintings and 2000 drawings; a tenth of Basquiat’s painting oeuvre was in collaboration with Andy Warhol. The exhibition will continue onto the Musée d’art moderne de la Ville de Paris, where it will be on view from October 15, 2010 to January 30, 2011.
