Just as this season's daring new volumes, proportions and shapes start sauntering down the street, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art digs into its closet of contemporary fashion to examine the revolutionary twists and turns of fashion's recent past with 'Breaking the Mode.' The last quarter of a century has witnessed a major shift in dressing, as pioneer designers such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Azzedine Alaia, Yohji Yamamoto, and Martin Margiela (to name just a few) have and continue to reinvent the codes of beauty through silhouette and technique. Construction, materials, form and concept the four corners of contemporary fashion also lay the groundwork for this landmark show. One hundred and thiry garments by over 40 international designers will be juxtaposed alongside classic pieces by legendary names such as Christian Dior, Gilbert Adrian and Charles James as a poignant picture of how the philosophy of fashion, from idea to execution, has evolved over time.
