In a rare retrospective the first in over 30 years, New York's MOMA offers an exhaustive insight into the work of abstract artist Brice Marden. This unprecedented gathering of over 50 paintings, including two which have never been seen before, will, for the first time, show the dramatic shift in style that Marden took during the mid 1980's. Starting with his earliest work, a 1962 monochrome, the chronologically curated exhibition charts the evolution of his work over nearly five decades.
During the mid 1960's the artist made his name in stark blocked divisions of color. Today he is better known for sinuous swirling ribbons effects, inspired by East Asian calligraphy a bold contrast to his early monochromes. Exploring light, color and surface, uplifting oeuvres such as Study for the Muses and the Attendant series attest to Brice Marden's talent as one of America's foremost abstract artists.
