Brice Marden is one of the most important,
post-minimalist, abstract artists in the USA.
This retrospective brings together 54 paintings and
drawings from his four-decade-long career.
From his early monochromatic works, followed
by bicolor and tricolor ones, to the brighter paintings
characterized by vibrant, twisting lines, the development
of Marden's work towards a more expressive style
is plain to see.
The highlights are two vast works, each measuring over
six meters. 'The Propitious Garden of Plane Image,
Second Version' and 'The Propitious Garden of Plane
Image, Third Version' both stretch over more than six
boards forming a spectrum of six colors – red, orange,
yellow, green, blue and violet. They were inspired by
Greek compositions and Chinese scrolls. Marden first
visited the Greek island of Hydra, where he later bought
a house, in the 1970s and many of his works draw
inspiration from Greece.
Marden collaborated on the show's conceptualization with
Gary Garrels, senior curator of UCLA Hammer Museum,
Los Angeles. The Hamburger Bahnof is the only European
venue to host the retrospective, which follows exhibitions
at the Museum of Modern Art New York
and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
