Paris, 1/23/07-2/24/07
Every year, Paris-based painter Christoph von
Weyhe leaves the City of Light to revisit the
colors, memories, and tranquility of home. For
several weeks he soaks in the raw beauty of
his native city of Hamburg — its dark waters,
imposing docks, industrial cranes, and evocative
rhythm of buoys bobbing with the river's
ebb and flow.
The painter, whose senses come alive as
night sets in, roams the corners of his city at
its most somber, and silent. With goache and
paper in hand he sketches the contours of the
city's stark architecture, and captures the
electric lights that penetrate the profound
darkness of the night. Back at his Paris atelier,
he transforms these swift nocturnal notes into
canvases, each one a magical, mysterious
reflection of the illuminating allure of obscurity.
