Houston, The Menil Collection

Acquired by The Menil Collection in 1998, Treatise on the Veil (Second Version) is one of Cy Twombly’s largest and most acclaimed canvases. After being on loan for an outstanding 2008 Tate Modern retrospective, entitled "Cy Twombly: Cycles and Seasons", Treatise on the Veil will be shown for the first time with a significant group of related drawings on loan from the artist’s private collection.

Together, the painting and the drawings reveal the making of a modern masterwork. Conceived by Bernice Rose, chief curator of the Menil Drawing Institute and Study Center, this exhibition displays twelve drawings focusing on the evolution of the art piece. These preliminary renderings made in early 1970 from cardboard, photographic reproduction or notebook paper are built upon the subtle themes of an earlier Veil painting by the artist.
