When filmmaker David Lynch is not behind the
camera, he's still doing a lot of other creative
things. So much so that the Fondation Cartier has
filled its vast two-floor premises with over 500
works of art (including photographs, sketches,
drawings, and paintings) that Lynch has been quietly
producing over the last 40 years. The largest
exhibition devoted to Lynch's visual arts output,
'Air on Fire' offers fans a treasure trove of Lynchian
material to ponder and admire. Spanning from surreal
photo-collages and cryptic paintings to childlike
post-it doodles, like his complex, cinematic
gems, these never-before-seen creations ooze
with arresting Lynchian atmosphere. "What I can
say is what you see, what you see is what I can
say," offers Lynch of the meaning behind these
expressive "intuitive journeys." A labyrinthine theatre
of macabre mystery, 'Air on Fire' is an
astounding, not-to-be-missed addition to Lynch's
masterful oeuvre.
