Brussels, Les Brigittines
Les Brigittines is a space largely intended for theater and performance works and while based in a baroque church from the 17th century, underwent significant expansion in 2008 to further include six workshops, artist apartments and a garden. The visual art installations of Didier Mahieu suit the space, despite the unlikely medium, because of the nature of his work which evokes multi-sensorial experiences liken to that of theater.
The exhibition constitutes a step in the developing personal mythology of the artist who uses objects like trees, boats and animals as focal points in a larger palette of impressions based on a mixture of sensory perception, memory, and the inner world of the psyche.
The celebrated perfumer Fragonard has collaborated in the installation of his work and formulated a delicate scent to accompany Mahieu’s work.
