This exhibition brings together over 150 medals and military decorations owned by Emperor Napoleon III and with his son Louis-Napoleon, Imperial Prince, for the first time in public view. As the first president of the French Republic and the last French monarch, Napoleon III occupies a unique place in history and his life story – both personal and political – is told through the military decorations. A battle, victory, friendship, or economic or political agreement is behind each medal and cumulatively they reveal an Emperor who was both internationally ambitious and concerned for France’s position in the modern world.
