James Whitlow Delano Solo Photography Exhibition,"Empire: Impressions from China"
m97 Gallery, Shanghai

Taken between 1994 and 2004, this series of shots by the Tokyo-based American photographer James Whitlow Delano is one of the most significant bodies of work about China in the past 15 years by a foreign photographer. This exhibition also passed as the first one-person photography show ever at the La Triennale di Milano Art Museum, Milan, Italy in 2005 and at the Palazzo Battioro in Venice, Italy in 2006. The work has never been shown in China until now.

With an extensive career that has led him to Asia, Afghanistan, Burma, India and Indonesia for publications such as Le Monde II, Time, Newsweek, and Vanity Fair, Delano's photographic recording of China exhibits both a reference to photojournalistic tradition and a highly individual pictorial style, that lends a poetic and timeless character to the scenes depicted.
