There's much more to glossy fashion spreads than
skinny models and designer clothing. Packed into
the pages of those sleek style mags, provocative,
narrative and poetic portraiture unfolds month after
month, by photographers who seek to challenge
and shape our ideas of beauty, identity, sexuality
and fame.
Sometimes supporting a glamorous aesthetic,
sometimes subverting it, fashion photography is at
the height of its powers, and its leading exponents
are among the greatest image-makers of our time.
Celebrating the innovation of contemporary fashion
portraiture and its prevalence in today's culture,
this exhibition is the first to focus on the portrait
work of five of the leading, most influential icons in
the industry, from Europe and America: Mert Alas
& Marcus Piggott, Corinne Day, Steven Klein,
Paolo Roversi and Mario Sorrenti. Chosen for their
unique, diverse stylefrom Klein's subversive
narratives and Mert & Marcus's modern fantasies
to Day's brutal realismthese sharp shooters are
blurring the boundaries of advertising, editorial and
fine art like never before.
