Forty years of rockin' fashion from Jean-Charles
de Castelbajac comes to shake up the Palais
Galliera, right in Paris's seat of old-fashion(ed)
class, the 16th arrondissement. From the bright
and splashy flashing Rubik's® Cube in the first
room to the bold primary colors of his clothing
designs, JC/DC is a creator who will never let
subtlety get the upper hand. From subversive
painting-dresses to clothing cribbed from other
media, such modern retail packaging or the cover
of Jean-Paul Sartre's 'Les Mots' in its familiar
Gallimard red and cream, Castelbajac is forever
stretching, pushing and exploding the familiar
borders of fashion. This is the first time the creator
has had an exhibition devoted to his work in Paris,
and here he has been given free rein, taking
charge not only of the choice of pieces shown
(from 1968 to the present), but also the décor and
sound design for the show. An innovative
Gesamtkunstwerk that is a playful riff, resonating
through fashion, history, design, art and music.
