Jewels within a jewel for this exhibition of gold
works by the contemporary artist Goudji.
Set in the royal Château de Blois, which offers
a sweep of French architecture from the Middle
Ages to the 17th century in a spectacular setting
overlooking both the Loire River and the small
winding streets of the town around it, this show
brings Goudji's reinventions of classical gold work
together in a three-angled show. From polished,
carved gold and silver to stones as colorful
and evocative as aventurine, serpentine, pyrite,
hematite, lapis-lazuli, sodalite, jasper and rustile
crystal, Goudji draws on different shades
and textures to create animal-themed pieces often
inspired by the iconography of Blois's château
itself: Louis XII's flying stag, François I's
salamander... Along with this jeweled bestiary
are two other rooms of Goudji's creations, one
with objects inspired by different civilizations,
the other based on major intangible themes such
as time, innocence and expectation. Magical
works from this "gold magician."
