Udine, 4/1/2007 - 9/30/2007
Hiroshi Sugimoto's latest Italian exhibition features
large-scale works, 50 to be precise, highlighting
many of the distinct themes of the artist's career,
dating back to his first Dioramas in the mid 1970s
through to his most recent projects, Lightning Field
and Talbot. Influenced by the conceptualist
and minimalist traditions, Sugimoto's superior
photographic techniques have earned him
worldwide acclaim, including the Hasselblad
Foundation International Award in Photography
in 2001.
Set in the 17th century dogal residence of Udine's
Villa Manin, the entire installation was conceived by
Sugimoto. Subtle allusions to the subjects, such
as an eerily authentic portrait of Napoleon -
created through photographing wax renditions -
placed within the ground floor bedroom in which
the 19th century French Emperor slept, suggest
an intelligent interaction with the surroundings.
Sugimoto's play on history is one of the most
interesting aspects of his work, from famous
historical sitters to primitive wildlife scenes.
