Focusing on design's prominent place in contemporary culture and its indelible link with the arts, the annual Shanghai Biennale celebrates its sixth year under the banner "Hyper Design." Conceived as a pan-cultural creative forum, over 90 artists — including such hard-hitting world talents as Matthew Barney (US), Francesco Vezzoli (Italy), Chen Wenling (China) and the Atelier Van Lieshout (the Netherlands) — have been invited by a team of 6 international curators to participate in this citywide exhibition. Through installation, painting, sculpture, multi-media collage, and performance art, the diverse chosen works present a patchwork of the visual voices of western and non-western artists. Divided into three sections — design and imagination, ordinary life practice, and future and history — the exhibition will not only be held at the Shanghai Art Museum, but throughout the city's many fashionable and historic destinations such as Renmin Park, Citic Square, Bund 18, Xintiandi and the Shanghai Sculpture Space.
