Born: 1968 (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)
Famed for his use of unorthodox materials and techniques to create imposing sculptures and installations, José Damasceno recently made his highly successful UK solo debut at the Thomas Dane Gallery in London.
Damasceno changes everyday objects into refreshingly unique forms that surprise and disorientate the spectator. 'Can You Hear Me?' is a composition of two jazz trumpets fused together at the mouthpiece that renders them unplayable while 'Organograma', oversized architectural works on graph paper, focuses on the artist's recurring theme of exploration.
The focal point of InfraMarket, however, was 'Dancefloor'. Marble footprints scattered in musical formation are a metaphor for dance... a social pastime that significantly marked Damasceno on his first visit to the capital city.
