Maastricht, Bel Etage Gallery at TEFAF (The European Fine Art Fair)

Wolfgang Bauer and the gallery Bel Etage will present a remarkable collection, of particular note for the furniture connoisseur.

It features furniture by the important Viennese cabinetmakers, Friedrich Otto Schmidt & Co, and the branch office in Budapest, Miksa Schmidt. Adolf Loos maintained a very close, lively and fruitful relationship with the company of Friedrich Otto Schmidt, especially with Max Schmidt and his foreman, Berka; there will also be numerous pieces of furniture designed by Loos as well as Loos¬-style furniture designed by Max Schmidt. In many cases it has proved impossible to authoritatively determine whether the author was Loos or Schmidt.

Additionally there will be pieces of furniture on show designed by Eduard Josef Wimmer Wisgrill, the extravagant furnishings for a Vienna apartment in 1912, as well as numerous references to Josef Hoffmann, Dagobert Peche and Koloman Moser and the Wiener Werkstätte at large.
