L'Atelier d'Alberto Giacometti
George Pompidou Center
A renowned surrealist sculptor who later broke from this movement to express larger ideas of modernism and existentialism, Alberto Giacometti enjoyed international success in his lifetime. Sometimes obsessively carving his sculptures until only a lean blade of stone remained, elongation and reduction dominated his creations.
For the first time, over 600 works find their unique and appropriate representation - in the context of a recreated studio. The exhibit is an extensive collection comprising rare works and unedited archives largely unseen by the greater public, as well as paintings, drawings, decorative objects, writings and wall fragments from his three main studio spaces throughout Europe.
A laboratory, a place of ritual, the determining space for creative elaboration - the role of the atelier and the complexity of the creative process are explored in this exhibit as much as Giacometti's work itself, proving that an artist and his space are impossible to disassociate.
