Paris, 6/12/2008 - 9/7/2008
After first being presented at Tate Britain, Peter Doig's gorgeous, illuminating and incredibly popular show is at the Muse d'Art Moderne in Paris. It brings together 46 of his paintings made over the last 20 years.
Born in Edinburgh and raised in Trinidad and Canada, Doig studied at St. Martin's School of Art in London. After working in London, where he was made a trustee of the Tate, he moved back to Trinidad in 2002. His bright paintings have a strange vibrancy, sometimes looking as if substances had been poured onto the canvas, burning the original colors.
Doig's portrayal of the world around him is partly inspired by how, as a teenager, he took acid; the memories of feeling detached from reality lend an otherworldly quality to the canvases. Many of the paintings are scenic, such as "100 Years Ago," of a lone man in a canoe, or "Blotter." Painted in pale hues of pink and blue, the latter depicts a teenage figure perhaps referencing Doig's adolescent self standing alone on a frozen lake, dwarfed by the woods and fractured ice around him.
