London's new Kinetica museum, the UK's first
museum dedicated to kinetic, electronic and
experimental art, is a testament to the
increasing influence technology has on art
and vice versa. For centuries, artists have
attempted to visualize the future, closely following
the development of a scientific and
technological culture. A precursor was the
Italian polymath Leonardo Da Vinci, credited
with the early conceptual invention of the helicopter
and an incredible knowledge of civil
engineering, optics and hydrodynamics.
However, Kinetica only goes back as far as
the early 20th century, featuring influential
works from that period. Luminaries &
Visionaries highlights nine leading international
artists working in the realms of projected
light, vision and illusion. Sam Buxton utilizes
technology originally developed for aerospace,
military and medical applications for
his humerous luminescent lounger, Skeletal
Chaise Longue, while Peter Sedgley creates
kinetic lighting influenced by the color theories
of Goethe and Klee.
