Despite winning the 2001 Turner Prize for his Work
No. 227, 'The Lights Going On and Off,'
the conceptual British artist Martin Creed has not
had a large-scale exhibition in the US until this
show. Creed is a witty yet serious artist whose
works with paper, text, music, light and air can
be surprising, humorous and playful.
This "survey" brings together his earliest pieces,
starting with Work No. 3: Yellow Painting (1986)
up to sculptures and videos, such as his 'Sick
Film,' that have been made over the last year.
His works are presented in two places: in the CCS
Galleries and also as an installation alongside the
permanent collection of the Hessel Museum of Art.
'The Lights Going On and Off,' which manipulates
existing light fittings to create an unexpected,
dramatic effect, is included in the show along
with 'Half the Air in a Given Space,' which
consists of blue balloons half-occupying a gallery
space. Visitors entering the installation change
its dynamics while momentarily engaging
with the artwork.
