Modern Britain 1900-1960
National Gallery of Victoria

While the spirit of contemporary British art is indeed vivacious, its modern foundations reveal an irreplaceably fine degree of sensibility.

Ted Gott, Senior Curator of International Art, has drawn together over 250 masterworks by 93 artists from the holdings of major public collections across Australia and New Zealand for an impressive assemblage of paintings, sculptures, watercolours, and works of graphic and decorative art.

Including the most famous names in 20th century British art such as Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Henry Moore and Paul Nash, the exhibition is also an opportunity to discover many artists who are less well-known.

Tracing visual developements and cultural stories during a highly charged and formative period, Modern Britian gives fresh perspective to British art in a uniquely narrative manner that allows six decades of history to be told without words.
