Newspeak: British Art Now
St. Petersburg, The State Hermitage Museum

The State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg and the Saatchi Gallery in London jointly present Newspeak: British Art Now, a selection of 50 works by British artists not yet fully known to an international audience. This exhibition is part of the Hermitage 20/21 project; a larger program intended to showcase the best of contemporary art at the Hermitage, expanding its engagement with 20th and 21st century art. While the first section of this exhibition premieres at The State Hermitage Museum, an expanded version, in two parts, will open at the Saatchi Gallery in London starting Summer 2010 through to January 2011.

In George Orwell's famous novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four, Newspeak is "the only language in the world whose vocabulary gets smaller every year"; this exhibition challenges this Orwellian vision with an expanding range of visual languages, in unfamiliar territory.
