Born: 1937 (Muralto, Switzerland)
Continuing its yearlong 40th anniversary celebration, the Yvon Lambert gallery in Paris pays tribute to one of its artistic pillars, Niele Toroni. This large solo show of his work is the 15th of its kind since the gallery's opening. Using his famed signature #50 brush, that he originally took up in the 1960s, Toroni continues to investigate the juncture between physical evidence and painterly abstraction by repeating the same paint-laden brushstrokes at regular intervals on various supports including canvas, paper and exhibition walls. Presenting a selection of works from the 70s through today, the show explores the syntax of subtlety within the rigor of restraint and the astounding, monumental power of perpetual sameness. The exhibition also showcases Toroni's most recent work: a limited edition book series (published by Biliophilie) in which the artist's repetitive 'fingerprint' strokes unfurl like an abstract stream across accordion-folded pages.
