This shocking modern artist, a native of Saint-Etienne,
is the subject of a huge retrospective—the largest
ever of her work—in her home town this summer.
Along with its impressive scope in size, the show
also marks two anniversaries in time: the artist's
60th birthday, and the 30th anniversary
of her creation The Artist's Kiss, which will be fêted
with the launch of a perfume by the same name,
created by the artist in collaboration with
the master perfumer Christophe Laudamiel.
As Orlan is a complex, polymorphous artist,
the show, too—while rooted in a chronological
look across her career—stretches tentacularly into
the many different forms and styles she has
deployed. From the provocative, performance-artbased
Surgical-Operations-Performances to works
influenced by Primitive Art called Self-Hybridizations,
and including such choice morsels as the work-inprogress
The Storyboard, a backwards movie
she began developing in 2001 from an idea
by Jean-Luc Godard, Orlan's "story"
(as the title of the show dubs it) is certain to make
a visit to this museum a real page-turner.
