In 1977, as the Queen celebrated her silver jubilee,
the Sex Pistols stormed the UK pop charts with
their impudent single 'God Save the Queen.'
On the thirtieth anniversary of those two events,
this exhibition celebrates the spirit of British
and American art made during the punk era,
from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s.
The eclectic works reflect how the punk
movement inspired the vibrancy of the art scene,
and highlights the intersection between art,
music and fashion.
The show features over 150 works – including
photography, paintings, performance art, film and
video – by some 30 artists. The affinity with punk
is closely expressed in Cerith Wyn Evans' film
'Epiphany' (1984), starring Leigh Bowery, Derek
Jarman's film starring the punk icon Jordan,
and, of course, Jamie Reid's collage for The Sex
Pistols' cover. Also featured are Cindy Sherman's
'Untitled Film Stills', Robert Mapplethorpe's portrait
of Patti Smith, and works by Gilbert & George,
Keith Haring, Richard Prince, Jean-Michel
Basquiat, Barbara Kruger, Paul McCarthy,
Nan Goldin, Tony Cragg and Jenny Holzer.
