Brussels, Palais des Beaux-Arts
Given Paul Klee's passion for music and theatre, it seems only appropriate that the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels decided to ask the conductor Pierre Boulez to co-curate this exhibition.
As the first solo show in Belgium on the Swiss artist since 1948, it aims to highlight Klee's metaphysical vision of the world and how he viewed it as a huge stage in which human beings become the characters. Indeed, the English title of this show is "Theater here, there and everywhere".
Klee (1879-1940) has been associated with expressionism, cubism and surrealism, and often approached painting with an abstract style that gave way to a poetic atmosphere. Having trained as a musician, he often incorporated theatrical and musical references into his pictorial compositions. His finely mastered paintings are usually delicate and small-scale. Like Kandinsky, he taught at the Bauhaus, linking his love for music with the visual arts.
