After meeting at the opening of a Kenzo store in
Paris in 1976, Pierre et Gilles have been an
inseparable duo who always work in tandem. In
their elaborately staged pictures, real-life
characters are introduced to fictitious, elaborate
settings. In the signature world of Pierre et Gilles,
young, naked men mingle with stars like Dita Von
Teese, Kylie Minogue, Madonna and Nina Hagen,
along with art personalities such as François
Pinault and Christian Boltanski.
Celebrating three decades of their collaboration,
this wonderfully curated exhibition highlights the
different themes – saints, Greek mythology, social
issues, popular culture, self-portraits – permeating
their work. Each themed room is painted a
different color, and some include surprise
installations, such as garlands of strawberries, that
are used in their sets. The show also features four
new works, including self-portraits of Pierre et
Gilles as presidents. Pierre appears as a military
Russian president, and Gilles as an American
democrat...
