Whiteread's first gallery exhibition in Italy
comes side by side with her first Italian museum
exhibition, currently at the Madre Museum
in Naples. If Italy is waking up to Whiteread's
art, it is not alone. Born in England in 1963,
Whiteread has become one of the leading
artists of her generation. Through her thoughtprovoking,
nostalgic yet provocative works,
she arouses both emotion and reflection. The
past is a two-way street: former times are
brought into the here and now, and today is
injected into yesteryear, a tactic symbolized
by her first striking success, the 1993 piece
'House,' which was a full-scale concrete cast
of a Victorian terrace house. That project
would define her methods and materials.
Using plaster, resin and rubber to make casts
of everyday household objects—from tables
and chairs to bathtubs, sinks, mattresses and
cupboards—she underscores loss, and recreates
belonging(s).
