New York, Friedrich Petzel Gallery

The Chelsea-based Friedrich Petzel Gallery brings the work of Rezi van Lankveld to New York for only the second time, despite this Dutch artist’s extensive showing in Europe.

Spontaneous and poetic, her paintings invite the viewer into an active mediation on emergent form, and to see whatever they may see in the sensual shapes made of confronting colors in thick paint.

The swirls of her canvases suggest figures like the Impressionists and tease with the imagination like the Surrealists, but carry a soothing simplicity that touches on the abstract.

Relatively young, having graduated from the Jan van Eyck Akademie, Maastricht only in 1999, Van Lankveld is a refreshing, uniformly-styled contemporary artist that – to her merit – uses nothing of shock value to establish her merit.
