Venice, 5/5/2007 - 11/11/2007
At a time when much attention in the art world
is given to videos and installations, this stunning
exhibition of paintings and sculptures reveals how
so-called "traditional" artistic practices are holding
strong. Through works by 15 contemporary artists,
it expresses the new twists and inventions
in painting and sculpture, and shows how the two
media complement each other.
Several artists have been commissioned to create
new works specially for the show. There's a new
series of paintings by Takashi Murakami, along
with new sculptures by Franz West and a new
body of work by the conceptual photographer
Louise Lawler. Her image titled 'Adolf, Install 8
inches above the floor' (2006) depicts Maurizio
Cattelan's miniature wax figure of a praying Hitler
while still in its shipping crate.
The show – curated by Alison M. Gingeras – also
reveals how Pinault has been busy buying the right
works by the right artists, from paintings by the
likes of Richard Prince, Martial Raysse, Roberto
Cuoghi, Mike Kelly and Laura Owens to sculptures
by Robert Gober, Urs Fischer, Anselm Reyle,
Subodh Gupta and David Hammons.
