Paris, Espace Culturel Louis Vuitton

Louis Vuitton is giving over its exhibition space atop its Paris flagship store to honor the immense stone heads, called Moai, of Easter Island. As part of the “Moai: Journey of Light” project, Vuitton will support the establishment of a Rapa Nui Foundation for 2009, to protect and promote the island’s heritage and to support sustainable development on Easter Island. The year 2010 will see, as the culmination of the project, the arrival of a Moai in Paris, selected and loaned by the Rapa Nui people as a messenger of peace.

The current exhibition, Silent Writings, has as its centerpiece three indecipherable Rongo Rongo glyphic tablets. These silent writings are the inspiration for a number of contemporary artists to explore that notion through the perspectives of Impression, Trace, Symbol and Writing. Claude Closky, Tracey Emin and Jenny Holzer are just some of the artists to undertake the challenge of deciphering language and writing by means of their own output.
