Hong Kong, Yan Gallery

Perhaps more a comment on the medium than the message, Luo Tai Sheng paints acrylic on canvas renditions of iconic figures –
from Hollywood’s silver screen, politics and popular music – yet with a pixelated, mosaic effect as if one were viewing the digital grain of an oversized screen or printed poster. This “Celebrity Series”, mainly in black and white, though certain works are in color, is created by a painstaking process of painting onto the canvas using strips of tape.

These bold faces, that are deeply embedded as a frame of reference for modern Western culture, is somehow softened and made more dynamic when seen through the screen of the artist’s unique approach.

Luo Tai Sheng, who started his artistic career in film making, attended the Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts and now lives and works as a full time artist in Shenzhen, though he was born in Hunan Province.
