Paradoxically both a traditionalist and a revolutionary, Soutine used classic schemas, such as landscapes, still lifes and portraiture, yet applied to these a dramatic style characterized by collapsed perspective, distorted figuration and boldly gestural brushstrokes. Lithuanian-born, Soutine moved to Paris in 1913, where he met contemporaries Amedeo Modigliani and Marc Chagall. While concurrent art movements such as Cubism, Futurism, Dada and Surrealism may have garnered more attention for Modernism, Chaïm Soutine maintained a highly unique style. An individualistic gem from this period in art history, Soutine is arguably more influential than is commonly recognized.
This representative survey, presented within the social and artistic context of the 20th-century, comprises about 60 works by Soutine and offers a wonderful opportunity to revisit or explore this extremely gifted contributor to modern art.
