Hedi Slimane has curated a visually stylish show
about the ephemeral world of youth, loosely
inspired by Tennessee Williams' play of the same
title. Slimane – a fashion designer and artist best
known for his skinny silhouettes for Dior Homme
and his photographs of the music scene in
London and New York – has selected works by a
bunch of young, hip, international artists whose
black-and-white aesthetics are attuned to his own.
The sleek, minimally presented show features
paintings by Matt Saunders, Gregor Hildebrandt,
Nate Lowman and Paul P. Also included are works
– ranging from drawings and photographs to
sculptures and installations – by Douglas Kolk,
Ryan McGinley, Mathew Cerletty, Dash Snow, Dan
Colen, Terence Koh, Saâdane Afif, Steven Shearer
and Gardar Eide Einarsson.
From subcultures like death metal and skating to
familiar subjects like music and drugs, the spirit of
many of the pieces encapsulates a search for
identity and the transient, experimental and fragile
nature of youth. Slimane, who has curated other
exhibitions on contemporary art and Robert
Mapplethorpe's photography, expresses – once
again – his sensitivity for youth culture and his
unique artistic vision.
