The Cristobal Balenciaga Museum has opened in the fashion designer’s home village of Getaria. Developed under the tutelage of the Cristobal Balenciaga Fundazioa Foundation, the Museum is located within a nineteenth-century villa that served as a summer home to the Marquis and Marquesa of Casa Torres, to which a striking contemporary structure has been added.

Of the 1,200 items in the Foundation’s collection, the permanent exhibition comprises of a careful selection of 90 items including suits and accessories categorized as Beginnings, Day, Cocktail, Night, Bridal and Essential Balenciaga. Highlights include the 109 dresses donated by Hubert de Givenchy, four suits donated by the Royal House of Monaco that Cristobal Balenciaga designed for Grace Kelly, and 29 pieces donated by Mrs. Bunny Mellon, one of Balenciaga´s most important clients. The wedding dress of HRH Queen Fabiola of Belgium, is considered by the Foundation and the current flagship of its collection but a continuing programme of donations means that new gems of couture will be exhibited as they are acquired.
