As the future of space tourism approaches, the theme
of Espace Louis Vuitton's summer exhibition,
assembling works by 10 artists, is very timely.
It includes Philippe Starck's video 'Virgin Galactic' –
shown on the ceiling of a circular room – featuring
astronauts floating in zero gravity outside an aircraft.
At the end, an image of an iris appears, blatantly
plugging how Starck's design for the visual identity of
Virgin Galactic is based on Richard Branson's iris, in
order to represent the entrepreneur's forward-thinking
vision.
On the outside terrace is Mathieu Briand's 'UBÏQ: A
Mental Odyssey, The Mental Ship'. Visitors enter the
white capsule, evoking a cosy, miniscule space ship,
one at a time. Inside is Briand's black-and-white film
of a lunar plateau. Other highlights are Nicolas
Moulin's 'Sternstelr', a black, minimal, freely rotating
installation; Pierre Huyghe's animated film 'One Million
Kingdoms', in which the manga character Annlee
walks across a lunar landscape; Russell Crotty's
'Globe Drawings', featuring pictorial landscapes
drawn with ballpoint pens on paper-covered spheres,
and Davide Bertocchi's 'Spazio', comprising dozens
of downloaded, digital images pertaining to space.
