CITY GUIDE / TOKYO / ARTS & CULTURE / COMME DES GARCONS

Comme des Garcons is renowned for its pioneering attitude to retail (it arguably invented the notion of anything prefixed with “pop-up”) and its latest store is no less innovative. The Commes des Garcons Trading Museum in Tokyo combines the brand’s traditional retail format – if you can call it that – with a selection of pieces curated by Rei Kawakubo, including fashion from up-and-coming designers, glassware, and vintage hats by Stephen Jones. Alongside all this are cabinets on loan from London’s V&A Museum, filled with interesting artefacts. Take heed: it’s too conceptual to be termed a concept store.
