A VIP room is also available for those who want to shop in style and privacy. Browns Shoes"The 'It' bag is over. Cue the hit shoe," writes Suzy Menkes in the International Herald Tribune this week. And in London the trailblazing fashion boutique Browns seconds her statement with news that shoes are its fastest growing category, having doubled year on year since their introduction two years ago. So important have shoes become to the cutting edge store that January 2009 saw the introduction of Browns Shoes, a standalone shop dedicated to footwear by the very best international designers (Azzedine Alaïa, Christian Louboutin and Nicholas Kirkwood included), as well as up-and-coming new talent (a key feature that has made Browns Fashion so influential). A bespoke shoe service and expert repairs confirm this as London's definitive destination for fans of footwear. Maison Martin MargielaThe fashionistas' favourite, Maison Martin Margiela, recently moved its London store from a hidden, insiders-only Mayfair mews house to a prominent Bruton Street location alongside the likes of Matthew Williamson and Stella McCartney. Taking its cue from the brand's Paris headquarters, the new space is primarily white and industrial looking, with the original brick walls exposed alongside mirrored shelving and gleaming floors. Armani/5th AvenueArmani/5th Avenue is the official name of the vast new Armani "concept store" in New York, though Armani Mall might be more appropriate – at 43,000-square-foot the gleaming, all-glass space is the first store in the United States to bring together all Armani brands – from underwear to bespoke suits – under one roof. Designed by Doriana and Massimiliano Fuksas, who also created the Armani Chater House in Hong Kong and Ginza Tower in Tokyo, the interior of the new 3-storey building is signature Armani with beige for the walls, black for the floors and ceilings and a glossy shine throughout. In short: retail nirvana for fans of minimalism and understatement. AzzaroAn urban dictionary definition of "pop-up store": a shop that opens for a temporary period, inspired by the 'guerilla retail' tactics of trailblazing fashion brand Comme des Garçons. KnizeFew luxury brands can claim the heritage of local institution Knize, said to be the world’s first menswear label. Established in 1858, it hasn’t changed much since then – think oak panelling, club chairs and an assortment of dapper gentlemen’s essentials including made-to-measure shirts and traditional panama hats. Ladies aren’t forgotten: not only is there a new line of women’s ready-to-wear, but Marlene Dietrich was famously faithful to the men’s suits. CombinatTo describe Combinat as simply a fashion boutique or even a concept store is to ignore its status as a creative hub for Viennese artists and designers. Founded in 2005 by four fashion labels (Pitour, MeYoTa, Artista and Doppler&Michlmayr), the 70 square meters space is used as a workroom and showroom, as well as a retail outlet. A revolving roster of temporary exhibitions by up-and-coming artists and photographers completes this indefinable establishment. Ludwig ReiterTraditional maker of handcrafted shoes, Ludwig Reiter has stores across Austria, Germany and Switzerland, but it is in Vienna that it was founded and where its famous factory is located. With a directional selection of designers that includes Azzedine Alaïa and Alexander Wang, this is the perfect port of call for yachties in need of a dose of high fashion. GucciGucci’s new Shanghai flagship is the first in a series of stores that will be designed by the Italian fashion house’s creative director, Frida Giannini. “For Shanghai, I wanted to blend a modern architectural statement that fits with the contemporary feeling of the city,” she says, “but also keep it firmly tied to iconic materials and elements from Gucci’s heritage.” Check out the changing rooms that come complete with Gucci monogrammed robes. HermèsLe tout Paris is talking about the arrival of Hermès on the Left Bank, where the legendary luxury goods house has opened shop on Rue de Grenelle. It’s only a temporary outpost – hence its modest size, playful MDF furniture and art installation made of cardboard – but provides a taster of what is to come at a much larger space on Rue de Sévres, which insiders speculate will overshadow the brand’s flagship store on Rue du Faubourg St Honoré. UniqloLow cost cashmere and an exclusive collection designed by Jil Sander - what better reason to brave the hoards of shoppers at the opening of Uniqlo’s Paris flagship store? Not since the days of rationing of has one seen queuing of such epic proportion as the Japanese discount fashion brand, which made its debut in the city of lights during the recent fashion week. Designed by Masamichi Katayama of Tokyo-based Wonderwall, the LED messages that circulate around the space may evoke images of the trading floor, but judging by recent events, this place is probably enjoying much more success. |
