CITY GUIDE / TOKYO / ARTS & CULTURE / HARA MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART

Founded in 1979, the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art is located in Tokyo's Shinagawa district. It is the first Japanese museum to specialize in contemporary art in Japan. A rare example of early Showa architecture, the superb museum is housed in a private 1930s residence and was entirely designed by Japanese design prince Jin Watanabe, who is also the man behind various Japanese landmarks such as Old Nichigeki and the Tokyo National Museum at Ueno. The art pieces are carefully selected from among Japan's best and up-and-coming artists, with the likes of Yayoi Kusama and Tadanori Yoko. Stop by the café, which overlooks the beautiful inner garden.
