And for a particularly Italian musical touch, each room and suite, designed by architect Ettore Mocchetti, bears the name of one of the greats of the Teatro Alla Scala opera house. Bravo!

Morgans

When Morgans hotel originally opened in New York in 1983, it marked the beginning of the boutique hotel phenomenon. Since then, Manhattan is awash with designer hotels that promise personal service, but Morgans remains one of the finest and reopened on August 28th 2008 after a full redesign by Andree Putman, who also designed the original hotel. With a sophisticated palate of black, white and grey, the hotel is decorated with original photography by Robert Mapplethorpe, vintage armchairs by Jean-Michel Frank and other objets by the likes of Marcel Wanders. The original boutique experience... but even better.

Thompson Beverly Hills

With the opening of the Thompson Beverly Hills, a little bit of Manhattan's SoHo has arrived in Los Angeles. Back in New York, the Sixty Thompson hotel is one of the city's most established boutique hotels and part of a brand that is expanding rapidly. Like its sister hotels the Roosevelt and the soon to open Thompson Lower East Side, the atmosphere at the new Beverly Hills outpost is hip and fashionable, with an interior created by Dodd Mitchell Design. Fashionable features include art installations by the photographer Steven Klein, an outpost of the BondSt sushi restaurant as well as that Los Angeles essential – a private rooftop pool lounge.

Mama Shelter

Philippe Starck has designed everything from boats to lemon squeezers, and is famed for his iconic hotel lobbies. The new Mama Shelter in Paris marks a first for this visionary designer: a hotel conceived for a clientele that is both budget and style conscious. With rates hovering around the 100 Euros mark, it is no surprise the rooms are small – but Starck has expertly made use of the limited square footage and his signature style is evident. A new bench mark for high style, low cost travel.

York & Albany

Overlooking London's Regent's Park, York & Albany is the latest project from über-chef Gordon Ramsay and includes a restaurant, bar and delicatessen, and marks his first foray into hotels, with ten bedrooms and suites. Housed in a former coaching inn, designed by John Nash and dating from the 1820s, the new all-day dining venue is overseen by chef Angela Hartnett, whose signature dishes include Gloucester Old Spot Pork loin stuffed with apricots and couscous. In short: a boutique hotel for gourmet tourists.

W Hotel

The highly anticipated W Hotel Hong Kong has finally opened in West Kowloon, to the delight of the city's hipsters and nearby financial workers. As with all W Hotels, the brand signatures of funky design and night club-inspired public areas are prevalent. Australian interior designer Nicholas Graham and Japanese designer Yasumichi Morita created the sophisticated guest rooms, while the lobby and bar have the expected "wow" factor. But in a city crammed full of rooftop pools, the standout is the dreamy pool and bar with mesmerizing skyline views.

The Eugenia

In the heart of Sukhumvit, The Eugenia is a converted 19th century colonial mansion that is now home to 12 unique suites. Furnished with exceptional pieces of antique furniture that have been collected with passion by the owner, Mr Eugene, during his travels around the globe. Everything at the Eugenia is dedicated to make the guests feel at home, but if you must leave this hidden gem and explore the city in style, you have the use of Mr Eugene's vintage sedans and limousines.

The Sukhothai

Designed by Ed Tuttle, the architect behind some of the renowned Aman resorts, the Sukhothai is a an urban oasis of relaxation amidst the bustle of Bangkok city center. Spread over six acres of stunning gardens, the elegant hotel is surrounded by courtyards and lotus pools, and its classical architecture sits at ease in this delightful setting. Often touted as one of the world's finest city hotels, the Sukhotahi is also popular with Bangkokonians – the Sunday brunch brings out the city's media, fashion and creative crowd.

The Peninsula

This legendary hotel is the true incarnation of luxury with its own helipad on the roof and penthouse suites with unrivaled panoramic views of the city. Enjoy a dinner on a private long-tail boat or relax by the three-tiered swimming pool in the lush tropical garden.

Delano Hotel

A vast lobby flanked by translucent white curtains and filled with striking pieces of furniture sets the tone at the Delano, one of Miami's most stylish hotels. Come nightfall, either party like a rock star in the Lenny Kravitz-designed Florida Room or relax in one of the white-on-white suites. Tropical chic.

The Setai

Arguably the epicenter of Art Basel Miami, the Setai hotel on South Beach is where all the major collectors stay and where all the gallerists and artists wish they were staying. Combining the authenticity of a 1930s Art Deco landmark building with the ultra-luxurious amenities of a new 40-story tower, the Setai really is the best of both worlds. Inside, the elegant lines, natural materials and Asian influences are the unmistakable hallmarks of über-hotelier Adrian Zecha, the creative force behind Aman Resorts.

Mondrian South Beach

Open just in time for Art Basel 2008, the highly anticipated Mondrian Miami is the latest luxury hotel to arrive in the South Beach area. From the same group behind the Mondrian LA as well as the Sanderson and St Martin's Lane hotels in London, the Mondrian South Beach was designed by Marcel Wanders and boasts a predictably fantastical interior, inspired by fairy tales (think oversized furniture and Wanders' signature lace-like creations). The spa, guest rooms and swimming pool areas all impress, but it is the pioneering public areas that are most interesting – this is possibly the world's first hotel that has incorporated dedicated "kissing corners."

The Raleigh Hotel

A restored Art Deco masterpiece, the Raleigh Hotel on Collins Avenue is an ode to retro styling and the glamour of the South Beach of another era. Part of Andre Balazs's group of cult hotels – which includes the Mercer in New York and the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles – the Raleigh is where hipsters and fashionistas flock to experience Balazs's renowned understated glamour: think striped deck chairs and old-school changing rooms on the beach. Don't miss the pool parties at what all of Miami considers the city's most glamorous swimming pool.

Fontainebleau Miami Beach

When it was originally built in 1954, the Fontainebleau hotel on Miami Beach became a national icon of elegance and luxury that endured until the 1970s. Everyone from Frank Sinatra to the President of the United States stayed here and it helped build Miami into the resort it is today. Just reopened after an investment of over one billion dollars, the Fontainebleau is back with a vengeance. Over 22 acres, the lush compound drips with luxury - ballrooms, VIP swimming pools and cabanas and a stunning 45,000 square foot lobby with a light installation by James Turell. The place to come for authentic retro-Miami glamor. Rough Luxe

In London's Kings Cross, a new hotel has opened that questions conventional notions of luxury travel. Do not be fooled into thinking that Rough Luxe, as the hotel is appropriately called, is unfinished; the partially sanded surfaces, bare floorboards, and chipped paint are the work of designer Rabih Hage, who describes the style as "deconstructed." Of course, luxury abounds in certain areas, with opulent furniture and ultra-fine linen, as well as crockery and cutlery bought at the Savoy Hotel's closing auction. Most controversial? The fact that not all of the nine bedrooms have en suite bathrooms. Check in with an open mind.

The Betsy

On the Art Deco Mecca that is Miami's Ocean Drive, a sole surviving example of "Florida Georgian" architecture exists that will imminently open as the city's latest luxury home-from-home. Built in 1942, The Betsy was always known for its old-school attitude towards luxury and service, something its new owners are keen to revitalize in an effort to differentiate from the ubiquitous shades of pastel and conceptual design of other hotels in this neighbourhood. Check in for a refreshing taste of the Miami of yesteryear.

Marmara Sisli Hotel

Seyhan Özdemir and Sefer Caglar of Istanbul-based designers Autoban have created the city's latest hotel, the Marmara Sisli, in the downtown district. Aimed specifically at business travellers, the home-from-home is nevertheless high on Autoban's signature style – think artfully unplastered ceilings with bold patterns and a vast all-concrete bar. After all, who said business trips had to be all work?

The Standard

Young, sexy, and pulsating... the Standard hotels in Los Angeles and Miami have carved a unique niche in the hospitality market. The latest outpost to open is the Standard New York, in the heart of the Meatpacking District and straddling – literally - the High Line, a once derelict railroad that is being transformed into Manhattan's newest public park. Developed by über-hotelier André Balazs (of Chateau Marmont and The Mercer fame) and designed by Todd Schliemann of Polshek Partnership, the new glass-fronted building is already a Downtown landmark. Reports so far suggest the Standard New York is as fun and lively as its predecessors, but note that not all the public areas will be functional until summer 2009.

Montage Beverly Hills

In the heart of Beverly Hills' Golden Triangle – the prestigious area bordered by Santa Monica Boulevard, Wilshire Boulevard and Canon Drive – the Montage Beverly Hills is LA's latest hyper-luxury hotel. The sister hotel to the Montage Laguna Beach, the new outpost ticks all the boxes to call itself an urban resort: smart topiary gardens, numerous destination restaurants and a vast 20,000-square-foot spa that includes 17 treatment rooms. And that's not forgetting the ballroom with painted ceiling or the specially curated art collection, a draw in itself.

Aloft Beijing

One of the biggest travel stories of 2008 was the launch of Aloft hotels, a branch of Starwood designed to cater to the creative businessman. Just opened is Aloft Beijing, one of many outposts of the brand planned for China. Designed in Aloft's signature bright colours, the hotel is conveniently placed for both the business district and the Forbidden City. Designer furniture and bathroom products by Bliss Spa up the luxury quotient, but remember the New York Times' evaluation of this emerging brand: "If the design-savvy retailer Target opened a hotel, this is what it would look like."

Hotel de Rome

Hands down the finest hotel in Berlin, the Hotel de Rome is housed in a converted bank and benefits from its high ceilings, classic proportions and a swimming pool in what was once the vault. Part of Rocco Forte’s Hotels, it was designed by Tommaso Ziffer, who worked with architects Aukett+Heese and Olga Polizzi to create an elegantly modern interior. If you’re looking for maximum glamour, take the Babel suite with its full-length terrace overlooking Bebelplaz. Staying elsewhere? Don’t miss the opportunity to take high tea in the Opera Court, a grand reception area and restaurant with a spectacular glazed roof.

The Mandala Hotel

Contemporary design, courteous service and generous space (rooms are between 40 and 130sqm) are the hallmarks of The Mandala Hotel on Potsdamer Platz. A member of the Design Hotels network, this is one of the most fashionable spots in town, with its Facil restaurant, buzzing Qiu lounge and indulgent Ono spa attracting Berlin’s hipsters. Check-in with expectations of being persuaded to stick around – one in five guests stays for longer than four weeks.

Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin

The Berlin home-from-home of power brokers, the Hotel Adlon is the residence of choice for presidents, politicians and their PRs. Unsurprisingly, there is an old-world atmosphere – especially in the clubby bar – that maintains despite a recent refurbishment that conceals state of the art technology as well as a complex of fashionable restaurants including Ma (Chinese), Uma (Japanese) and the gourmet restaurant of celebrated chef Lorenz Adlon. The clincher that secretly draws the power crowd? The pristine day-spa that is consistently voted the best in Berlin.

Ace Hotel

Democratic luxury, deconstructed design and a rich experience over unnecessary amenities are the hallmarks of Ace Hotels, who has turned the travel industry on its head with the opening of its first outposts in Seattle and Portland. New York is the latest branch, in a historic building in ‘NoMad’, the neighbourhood immediately north of Madison Square Park. Ace collaborated with New York designers Roman & Williams to create the space filled with a mix of vintage and custom furnishings. Check-in to experience the new face of luxury travel.

Sanctum Soho

The owners of Sanctum Soho, a new boutique hotel in the heart of London’s West End, are expecting a particularly indulged sort of guest. Alongside the usual luxury hotel services, Sanctum offers on-request private security, a Nike shoe menu for use at the capital’s most exclusive gyms, and an ominously named “box of tricks” that includes an “intimacy kit and much, much more.” Appearances are deceiving – Sanctum Soho is housed across two traditional Georgian townhouses that give no clues to the hedonism found within.

Grand Hotel Wien

Glamour from another era lives on at Vienna’s Grand Hotel, where classic style and exquisite period furniture reigns supreme. That’s not to say it’s stuffy – far from it, with the Uknai sushi bar and fashionable Schanigarten outdoor dining terrace. Just steps away from the opera house, the Grand Hotel is quite simply the hub of Vienna’s social scene.

Do & Co Hotel

Old and new are juxtaposed at Do & Co, a strikingly contemporary hotel that looks out onto its historical next-door neighbour in the form of St Stephan’s Cathedral. Part of the Design Hotels group, the hotel is housed within the Haas Haus, a sparkling glass and metal structure designed by Pritzker-winning architect Hans Hollein. Check-in for panoramic views (the best in town), ultra-luxurious rooms (showers measure a generous two-square meters) and delicious food (the hotel is part of leading chef’s Attila Dogudan’s exclusive catering company).

W South Beach

W Hotels – the hip hotel brand that invented the concept of sociable ‘living room’ lobbies and renowned for its young atmosphere – has found its spiritual home at South Beach, Miami. The latest W outpost has all the brand signatures, including designer furniture, a Bliss Spa and a Sweat gym. But it's the forthcoming branch of legendary restaurant Mr. Chow that has Miami locals looking forward to people watching over Peking duck.

Monte Carlo Beach Hotel

Once a playground of the roaring twenties, the Monte Carlo Beach Hotel is set to revive its position as a jet-set destination after a dramatic refurbishment. Paris-based designer India Mahdavi, renowned for her sophisticated interiors that have a whimsical edge, took charge of the project that saw the hotel reopen with a terracotta-coloured exterior and guest rooms filled with sculpture and wall frescoes. Fragrant landscaping courtesy of sought-after gardener Jean Mus makes this an oasis in the metropolis that is Monaco.

The PuLi Hotel & Spa

The urban resort concept has arrived in Shanghai with the opening of a new hotel, The PuLi. Situated at the heart of the city between the famous NanJing West Road and YanAn Road, The PuLi is spread across 26 floors of contemporary space and includes special features that focus on relaxation, including bathtubs with panoramic skyline views.. A 32m Long Bar featuring the “longest” wine and champagne selection in town and an Anantara spa complete the urban oasis.

Grand-Hotel du Cap Ferrat

The Grand-Hotel du Cap Ferrat – one of the most prestigious hotels in the south of France, if not the world – has reopened after a major refurbishment that celebrates its 100th birthday. Architect Pierre-Yves Rochon worked around stunning original features, including an original rotunda in the lobby designed in 1909 by Gustave Eiffel, to create light-filled public spaces and a series of new suites with private infinity pools. Outside is as luxurious as inside, with gardens created by landscape gardener extraordinaire Jean Mus that make the most of this unrivalled location at the tip of the exclusive Cap Ferrat.

Le Gray

Beirut nights are well-known for chic restaurants and glamorous clubs, but the hotel scene has hardly enjoyed the same profile. That is, until now with the opening of Le Gray, the highly anticipated new hotel from Gordon Campbell Gray – the creative force behind One Aldwych in London and Carlisle Bay also in London – which is set to open imminently. Contemporary interiors, views of the Mediterranean, and a destination restaurant are all enticing, but it is the sexy rooftop pool that has Beirut locals preparing for poolside posing.

1835 White Palm Hotel

With a prime position at the furthest point of the port of Cannes, the 1835 White Palm Hotel has the advantage of views across the harbor as well as onto the beach clubs. Reopened after a contemporary refurbishment by architects Marc Hertrich and Nicolas Adnet, this is one of the most hopping hotels in town with its 360° restaurant and a rooftop terrace with reflecting pool. Its piece de resistance? The seawater thermal baths that offer a range of spa treatments which are unique to Cannes.

Epic Hotel

A boutique hotel with resort facilities is how the Epic hotel in Miami differentiates itself from the Delano and The Setai, et al. Lush gardens, a chic poolside deck complete with cabanas, and even a private marina (unusual, even in these parts) set the tone for designer Cheryl Rowley’s classic modern interiors.

Mamilla Hotel

Could it be that Jerusalem is rebranding itself as a capital for contemporary design? Hot on the heels of Santiago Calatrava’s Railway Bridge, which opened last year, and preceding the Ron Arad-designed Design Museum, which opens later this year, is the just-opened Mamilla Hotel, designed by Moshe Safdie and Piero Lissoni. Making use of Jerusalem stone (a local limestone that must be used in all new buildings in Jerusalem), and other natural materials, this handsome new hotel is home to 194 luxuriously appointed rooms as well as a complex of destination restaurants. Panoramic views of the Old City complete the set up at what is now Jerusalem’s premier home-from-home.

Ni Hotel

The newly opened Ni Hotel in Monaco is a rare thing in the travel industry, a boutique hotel that is just that: small (just 17 rooms), individual (the arty décor is, shock, not the work of a big name designer) and independent. Situated at the foot of the Monaco rock, it’s a short stroll from the port and boasts views of the superyacht-filled harbour from its plush roof terrace. Check-in to one of the duplex suites with Perspex spiral stairs for the ultimate Monaco experience.

Peninsula Hotel

There is a button by the bathtubs at the new Peninsula Shanghai that, with one click, dims the lights, activates the “Do Not Disturb” function on the phone and doorbell, and switches on soothing music. It’s just one of a long list of innovative developments made by the ultra-luxurious hotel chain for its latest outpost. Situated on the Bund with views of the Pudong and the gardens of the former British Consulate, the Peninsula Shanghai is riot of Art Deco-inspired design mixed with Chinese accents courtesy of Paris-based interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon. A series of destination restaurants and bars, as well as the famous Peninsula Spa, completes the set-up.

Elysian

Elysian’s new flagship hotel is a monolith of modern luxury, from its white carrara marble bathrooms, to the xxx. The Lucien Lagrange and Simeone Deary designed haven of hospitality harks back to the grand hotels of the early 20th century , boasting a European style courtyard outside and a champagne and platinum color palette , inspired by the glamour and craftsmanship of Coco Chanel and Christian Dior. Head chef Jason McLeod disprove’s any negative preconceptions about American cuisine, serving up fantastic US fare using fresh ingredients sourced locally.

The Crosby Street Hotel, located on the thoroughfare between Prince and Spring Streets, which it is named after, is decorated in a mix of modern and antique furniture and original art as conceived by Firmdale cofounder Kit Kemp. A leafy courtyard bar and luxurious bedrooms are complemented by the brand’s signature feature: an ultra luxurious screening room with seating from Poltrona Frau.

Hotel Arts

Making a business trip to Barcelona? The city’s finest business hotel is without a doubt the Hotel Arts in the city’s marina area. Which is not to say it’s corporate – quite the opposite! Panoramic city views, an outstanding spa and the feeling that you could touch Frank Gehry’s nearby “fish” sculpture make this an interesting home-from-home and the perfect complement to the Arts’ cutting-edge conference facilities and first class service. Those in need of something extra special should check-in to one of the luxurious suites on the Club Floors.

Aspria Berlin

Whereas most luxury hotels have a gym attached, at the new Aspria hotel in Berlin the hotel is best described as an attachment to the gym, for its 14,000 square meter sporting club and spa is state-of-the-art and the city’s premier destination for fitness. Local designer Michael Brown of NAU transformed the former industrial space into his signature “immersive cocoon” concept and filled it with elegant furniture by the likes of Vitra, Knoll, Moooi and Linea. Check in and work out.

The Upper House

Frequent flyers to Hong Kong are whispering about The Upper House, a boutique hotel (if you can call it that given that it has 117 rooms) which is garnering rave reviews from guests and the travel press for its impressive design. Perched in the Admiralty neighborhood, the Upper House has both hillside and skyline views from its glass-walled rooms. Design consultant Jimi Yui and architect Andre Fu collaborated on the interiors, which feature natural materials including limestone, wood, shoji glass and lacquered paper panels. High design mixed with traditional Hong Kong accents is its signature.

Distrito Capital

The latest home from home from the Grupo Habita, the Mexican hotelier, is the Distrito Capital hotel in the Santa Fé neighborhood of Mexico City. Joining outposts including the Condesa DF hotel on the other side of town, the Distrito Capital is built in the brand’s signature style, including a cool minimalist aesthetic (courtesy of Parisian designer Joseph Dirand) and public areas (including a film projection room) that are intended to encourage social interaction. Look out for the cool vintage furnishings by Charlotte Perriand among others.

Klapsons, The Boutique Hotel

The latest hotel to join the Design Hotels stable is perhaps its most designed yet. Conceived by William Sawaya of Sawaya & Moroni, the Klapsons hotel in Singapore comprises a check-in desk fashioned from a giant metallic sphere, a reception area with a ceiling punctuated by ‘clouds’ that change colour, suites that feature oversized showers within the bedroom, and bathrooms that open onto decked private terraces. Each room is unique and design-literate reservations staff will talk you through the aesthetic of each.

Kameha Grand

“Typical business hotels are very serious and practical, usually very boring too” says uber-designer Marcel Wanders, the creative force behind the new Kameha Grand hotel in Bonn. “Corporate and event hotels should be exciting, stimulating and inspiring; they should offer a high standard of living and a corresponding lifestyle. The Kameha Grand Bonn is a place full of surprises, of beauty and energy, a place that is sexy and cool.” How does he achieve this vision? “Meeting islands” in the lobby and dedicated “workaholic” suites designed for all-night work sessions are just some of his innovations.

Ames Hotel

The latest outpost of the Morgans Hotel Group, the pioneers - if not the inventors - of the boutique hotel, is the Ames hotel in Boston, a slick renovation of a historic 19th-century building that has been reworked by architect and designer David Rockwell of Rockwell Group. Original fixtures including a brass and marble staircase and mosaic tile vaulted ceiling in the lobby are juxtaposed with contemporary site-specific installations such as the ceramic wall art made up of layers of hand cast porcelain tiles. “Benjamin Franklin meets a supermodel,” is how the CEO of Morgans sums up the site.

Palazzina Grassi

The most surprising thing about the Palazzina Grassi is not its name (confusingly similar to Palazzo Grassi, the museum it is located next to and which is home to the art collection of Francois Pinault) but the fact that it is the first Italian project of prolific designer Philippe Starck. As such, whimsical touches abound, including his signature lamps, alongside approximately 300 Venetian mirrors and Murano glass lamps. The clincher? A stellar location perched on the Grand Canal with stunning lagoon views.

Mandarin Oriental

The Mandarin Oriental hotel has opened its doors in Barcelona on prestigious Passeig de Gràcia. Luxury is in the details, which include Fragonard toiletries in each room and a dedicated personal concierge.

Yas Hotel

Formula 1 fans take note: the new Yas Hotel in Abu Dhabi sits on the city’s Grand Prix circuit where it stretches over the track to offer unrivalled race views. And that’s not all that sets the Yas apart, even in a region that is renowned for seven star innovations in hospitality – the hotel is covered by a “Gridshell” of light that is constantly changing colour. New York architects Asymptote Architecture, working with designers Jestico + Whiles and Richardson Sadeki, created the spectacular structure and inside conceived an interior that is a contemporary take on traditional Islamic aesthetics. Pole position in terms of design and originality.

Amanfayun

An entire village that was established during the Tang Dynasty is the spectacular setting of the latest resort from cult hotelier Aman. Amanfayun is located just outside Hangzhou in a hidden valley of tea fields, Buddhist temples, and lush forest. 47 historic structures built in traditional Chinese architecture form for basis of the resort and are filled with Asian accented contemporary pieces. Hullett House

Five restaurants, a 10-suite boutique hotel, a gift store and a performance space make up Hong Kong’s new Hullett House compound. Located in a colonial white-stucco building that was formerly the Marine Police Headquarters, this is the brainchild of restaurateur David Yeo, who was worried that the building would be destroyed without his intervention. English breakfasts, traditional Chinese cuisine, Spanish tapas, and afternoon teas ensure there is something for everyone.

Andaz Wall Street

Andaz is a new hotel brand from the Hyatt Group that aims to fill the niche for boutique-sized hotels created for sophisticated and quality-sensitive guests. Hotel Cristal

Glass and metal mixes with marble and oak, while luminous colors are combined with vivid graphics at the new Hotel Cristal Champs-Elysées in Paris. The surreal interior is the work of designer Mattia Bonetti, who once described himself as a “troublemaker turned traditionalist”, goes some way to explaining the bright but sophisticated aesthetic. Check-in if you’re an art aficionado who wants to experience life as envisioned by this celebrated designer

Algodon Mansion

The latest luxury home-from-home in Buenos Aires is found in a handsome French-style building that dates from 1912, impeccably restored to its former glory. Classic mixed with contemporary is its signature: perfectly proportioned rooms, marble staircases, and a mix of limestone and ebony wood floors are juxtaposed with modern additions including furniture by B&B Italia and Cappelinni, as well as a six-story light well with a cascading waterfall that descends into the lobby. Twenty-four-hour butlers, French and Argentine cuisine, and a rooftop pool complete the setup.
