CITY GUIDE / NEW YORK / HOTELS / NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM OF UTAH, SALT LAKE CITY

When New York-based Ennead Architects were commissioned to design a new home for the Natural History Museum of Utah in Salt Lake City, they looked to the site’s surroundings for inspiration. And taking their cues from from the Wasatch Mountain Range, the foothills of which the museum is nestled within, they created a striking building that is both rugged yet elegant. From its exterior wrapped in 42,000sqft of standing seam copper (mined from Kennecott Utah Copper's Bingham Canyon and chosen to represent the local layered rock formations) to the interior that bursts with geometric walls and walkways, there is a clear relationship with its environs. Providing more than just 163,000sqft of research and exhibition space, the Natural History Museum also fulfils its role by framing commanding views of the local landscape.
