1918 ArtSPACE

1918 ArtSPACE, situated in the fashionable French Concession district, is the launch space for some of China's most dynamic contemporary artists, including Chen Changwei, Huang Jun, Hui Xin, Jiao Xing-tao, Liang Wei-Zhou and Yang Li-Ming. Whether viewing paintings, video installations or sculptures, the gallery's young owner, Zhao Yong-Gang, has an eagle eye for pinpointing ideas with far-reaching commercial potential.

Art Scene China

Art Scene China grew to become a bricks-and-mortar gallery in Hong Kong in early 2000. Towards the end of 2002, Art Scene China moved to a new location in Shanghai. A villa built in 1930 in the city's beautiful former French Concession was especially renovated for the Gallery, bringing Shanghai one of it's premier cultural venues. Art Scene China now participates in some of the most important art expositions worldwide, such as Art Chicago, SFIAE – San Francisco International Art Exposition, and Art Miami.

CONTRASTS GALLERY

Contrasts Gallery deals in fine art and Chinese contemporary design. It also focuses on 20th-century Chinese avant-garde artists. In addition, the gallery also represents international artists to support its cultural exchange program between the East and West. Founded by Pearl Lam in 1992 in Hong Kong, Contrasts Gallery has also opened in Beijing.

JADE ON 36

On the top floor of the Pudong Shangri-La hotel, Jade on 36 brings you a fine dining venue with a breathtaking view of the Bund and a stunning Tihany designed interior. The Shanghai Duolun Museum of Modern Art provides services for the development of Chinese contemporary art and is a platform for the international exchange of contemporary art. Housed in a seven-storey building, it covers an area of 4,800 square meters. Duolun Road was once the place where many famous cultural figures in Chinese history, such as Lu Xun, created their literary and art works.

Running on the success of their Hong Kong venture, the Jia group -led by its dynamic 29 year-old founder Ms. Yenn Wong- has just recently opened a new boutique hotel in Shanghai. Nestled in a stunning 1920's building on the corner of Nanjing Road and Tai Xing Road, The Jia Shanghai was instantly appraised by discerned travellers and design experts round the world. Another opening has already been announced for 2008 in Krabi, Thailand: the expansion of the Jia empire shows no signs of slowing down.

Sasha's

From playing home to the invading Japanese army in the 1940's to being a center of education when it was a music school in the 1950's, this turn of the century building has, throughout its history, seen its fair share of action. Now as a restaurant and bar, Sasha's is one of Shanghai's best places to relax and enjoy the outdoors away from the city bustle by sipping on one of their extra special Martinis.

Hublot

Young and acclaimed Geneva-based Swiss watch manufacture, Hublot has just opened its first boutique in the Asian region. The brand who first combined a rubber bracelet with a gold dial is celebrating its worldwide success with the inauguration of a splendid shop in Shanghai.

Design Library

The second outpost of the Italian design initiative Design Library has opened in Shanghai. Following the same mission as the first branch in Milan, Design Library Shanghai aims to promote Italian design and international developments in the field by providing access to magazines, books, catalogues and DVDs. With a sleek interior created by James Irvine and Maddalena Casadei and rare and interesting design texts, this is already one of Shanghai's most interesting hidden gems.

Pucci

With its iconic, colorful prints that recall the spirit of the Côte d'Azur, you can't miss Shanghai's new Pucci store – the brand's first in mainland China - in the prestigious Citic Square Mall. Designed in the signature style of Pucci stores around the world, complete with Pucci-print carpet and Cappellini armchairs, the new store is sure to be a hit in this luxury-loving city.

Pralinor

The best – and in fact, the only – store in Shanghai that produces handmade Belgian chocolates, Pralinor is a local institution. Chocolatier Mehdi El Idrissi creates satisfyingly chunky bars, traditional pralines and an array of truffles that can be specially ordered with a choice of ganache fillings. Chocolate is the focus here with not even pastries on the menu. Sign up for one of Mr. Mehdi’s classes to learn how to make chocolate from the master himself.

KEE Shanghai

Hong Kong’s famous private members club goes further afield, to Shanghai. Located in a restored 1920s heritage maison in the heart of the city, the four-story club exudes laid back elegance. Oenophiles rejoice in the club’s impressive list of over 200 wines – this is the place if you fancy a taste of a good rare vintage, although the signature cocktail menu is a tempting alternative. Chef William Mahi serves up both French and Chinese fare in the main dining room on the third floor, or if you’re looking for something more intimate, the Vacheron Constantin and Alfred Dunhill salons on the fourth floor seat just 18 guests.

The secondary market for contemporary Chinese artists might have suffered of late, but gallery scene in Shanghai continues to thrive as the appetite for new work remains. The latest space to champion the work of young local talent is a second outpost of Island 6, a gallery that has previously represented international artists within China. At 41,000 meters squared, this is the third largest art space in town and is located at the heart of the Moganshan Road creative district. Gucci’s new Shanghai flagship is the first in a series of stores that will be designed by the Italian fashion house’s creative director, Frida Giannini. “For Shanghai, I wanted to blend a modern architectural statement that fits with the contemporary feeling of the city,” she says, “but also keep it firmly tied to iconic materials and elements from Gucci’s heritage.” Check out the changing rooms that come complete with Gucci monogrammed robes.

The PuLi Hotel & Spa

There is a button by the bathtubs at the new Peninsula Shanghai that, with one click, dims the lights, activates the “Do Not Disturb” function on the phone and doorbell, and switches on soothing music. It’s just one of a long list of innovative developments made by the ultra-luxurious hotel chain for its latest outpost.
