What makes an icon? The dictionary defines it as an important and enduring symbol or, in the case of an individual, a person who is the object of great attention and devotion. Though that seems to ignore the talent, originality and sheer genius that should be essential requirements of iconography. The five icons profiled in this week’s issue were all selected on the basis of their achievements in their respective creative fields as opposed to any form of hero worship.
