While many love the styling of vintage cars – and indeed prefer it to today’s automobile design – most drivers are put off from owning a classic car due to their unreliability and expense to maintain. Modern convenience wins over sophisticated silhouettes from another era. But what if it was possible to have both? This is the unique idea behind The Speedback by new British sports car company, David Brown Automotive.

It might look like an Aston Martin DB5 (David Brown has no relationship with Aston Martin) with hints of the Ferrari 250GT and Maserati 3500 thrown in, but underneath its handcrafted aluminium body the 2+2 is as modern as it gets. Based in the same chassis and engineering as a spanking new Jaguar XKR, it boasts a supercharged V8 engine and cocooning leather interior that hides non-vintage essentials like air-conditioning and electric windows. Just revealed last month, The Speedback is currently on show at Monaco’s Top Marques show. The gorgeous ride will be produced in a limited edition at a cost that has not yet been revealed – but what price for the elegant lines of the 1960s fused with ultra-reliable, cutting edge technology?

“I was in a classic car rally in Spain, in a friend’s Ferrari Daytona, when it broke down. We hired a Peugeot 106 and everyone wanted to drive in that because it had air-conditioning. It gave me the idea to blend the Sixties style with technology that worked properly.”

“These wire wheels were specially made for us, they’re actually the widest wire wheel in production.”

“The headlights are encased like a sixties original, but actually use LED technology.”

“This car will appeal to anybody who desires a truly individual sports car, which can boast a fine British pedigree and which will only be produced in limited numbers, thus ensuring the kind of exclusivity associated with Britain’s once proud heritage of traditional, high-quality, automotive coach-building.”
