Thom Browne is well known as the American fashion designer who caused a small revolution in menswear with his signature shrunken tailoring. And now, in the automobile equivalent of the 3-piece suit with shorts (a Browne invention), his latest creation is a one-of-a-kind car, a special edition of the Infiniti Q50 with a spectacular all-chrome exterior. “This was an opportunity to get creative and translate my vision for fashion to the road,” says Browne of the project. “I went into this project almost as if I was designing a bespoke suit.”

Commissioned by luxury online retailer Gilt, the Brownemobile will be sold – along with another unique Q50 created by Zac Posen – at on December 12. The price of $75,000 includes a portion that will be donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Joining a garage worth of couture car collaborations – which notably include the recent Hyundai Equus by Hermes and the just-announced Maserati Quattroporte by Ermenegildo Zegna – Thom Browne’s Q50 is reflective of his sartorial aesthetic. The signature Thom Browne colours of red, white and blue are found in stripes across the seats and within the door frame and Browne’s love of reflective aviator sunglasses extends into the polished chrome finish. “Everything is made-to-measure, from selecting the materials and colors, to tailoring the upholstery to fit the curves and lines of the interior, and also making sure that the hallmarks of my design aesthetic are still reflected throughout." The final Thom Browne touch: a set of bespoke luggage that is designed to fit perfectly in the Q50’s trunk.
